I have a question about how the areola grow. When I had my first BR, I was left with normal size areolas. Now that I have grown back quite a bit, I have large areolas again. I still have the exact same scar lines, so are they just stretched or, are they growing from the middle?? -- |

What an interesting website, thanks!!! -- |

Thanks for the link, Annette. It is good to know that if my puffy areola doesn't resolve itself after swelling decreases, then I always have options to get it made smaller. Unfortunately, my PS said he'd make mine the size of a half-dollar, but they are actually quite larger and one is very puffy. -- |

I haven't seen my IBT's yet (still bandaged up), but I think my aeroelas are smaller. I hope they are good! I'm nervous that I can't check until tomorrow!!!!!!!! I also wanted to ask- they take the nipple totally off, don't they? I didn't know that till the day before my surgery. Totally grossed me out...yikes mine hurt just thinking about it! -- |

My PS never discussed size and now I wish mine were a little bit smaller. So for those of you how are post op, remember to ask the question. -- |

| Hi, I just read your post. It is kind of old but I was wondering what ever happened with your puffy areola. It's going to be a year of my breast augmentation (implants through areolar incision w/ areola reducution) on June 14th and both of my areola's are still puffy. One is acceptable but the other is extremly puffy and noticable through thin shirts. I appears, to me, as if some breast tissue was trapped behind the scar tissue causing the areola to protrude. Although, this may just be something I frabricated to myself in trying to understand what is causing this. It has not yet been a year and I've read that it may take a year or more for this to subside. I am extremly satisfied with my doctor's work, however, lately this issue had been disturbing me quite a bit to the point where it sadens me. Especially since my one year anniversary is fast approaching and the puffiness still hasen't resolved. Any info you can provide would be wonderful. Thanks in advance. |

My name is Teresa too! I had aerola "reconstruction" too...I have been 3 years post op and my nipples were huge...so embarrassing so I asked to have it done. The dr said he took a v-shape piece out to reduce the size. I actually still have some swelling but I am so pleased to have smaller nipples. My husband isn't as happy but I can shirts and not be so conscience of them! Good Luck! OH, my sensitivity and numbness is still a problem but I guess you have to give up one to have another? Don't know...just joined so excited to read more about other people's experiences!! -- |

| It's been almost 4 weeks post op and my PS never mentioned downsizing my aerolas until 5 minutes before surgery. I always thought that my aerolas were quite small for my breast size and I didn't mind them staying the same but when the time came I barely knew my PS but for some reason after meeting with him for 15 minutes in my pre-op I totally trusted him. I told him to do whatever looked proportioned to me. I believed him to be a pro and put all my trust in him. Now that I look back to 3 weeks ago I think I was totally crazy and should have spent more time getting to know him but I was so ready to get it done! Luckily, I had do have a fantastic PS and he did a great job but for the research I barely did, I really think I got lucky. Please ladies, make sure you choose with assurance! |

I thought my nipples look way too small immediately leaving surgery, but now they look bigger. I have uneven swelling, and the nipple on the smaller side looks much bigger by comparison. I think that's what it comes down to... the nipple size being appropriate for the breast size. (I'm glad that the line where my areola's end is much more defined now, too. The color used to be blended with my skin tone around the edges.) -- |

When I came home and looked at mine, although dressings were on, nipples had been left open so you could see them, the areola were much smaller than my original but the nipples themselves were really sticking out and seemed long! My DH thought they were marvellous, I was a bit scared never seen them sticking out like that before!!! I have to say now they have calmed down and are perfect for the size of breast but I did not discuss with my PS what I wanted, I am glad she got it just right though, they are pretty and most importantly in the right place! I always had unusually small areolas, even when I was a child. I used to be embarrassed about it when I saw other little girls with their tops off. As an adult I was accustomed to my small areolas and mentioned this to my PS. She told me that she used an areola template to get the right size. I have noticed now that I am OTR that my areolas are no longer smaller than normal in relation to my breast size. This was weird for me but now I actually look like I have my mother's or sister's breasts! Even though I had come to like my small areolas, now that they are more normal in proportion I am fine with it. The only thing I am hoping for is that they even out and get more round eventually. Hi Ivy, I'm going to see if I can get an official answer on this for you. I'll let you know what I find out. I know this occurs but I'm unclear about the reason you were given and the recommendation you received. I'll report back!

Hi Ivy, I turned your replies on for this post so you'd get my response in your email. Don't reply to the email - but click on the blue link within the mail to return to the board to reply. Anyway, I received a response from one of the many surgeons we consult with. Additionally, if you wish to get pictures to me (I can advise you...) then I can have it further reviewed for you. No fee. The response: It can be revised and removed more than likely. It should be removed or discussed before surgery if the surgeon doesn't think they can get it out at the initial surgery. Let me know how I can help you further. |

Hi Ivy, We work on the board but you can use our help desk which is private to talk with us about this if there are some private issues you'd like to discuss. Let us know how we can help. |

If you want to post me a picture on the help desk board you can do that. I'll have it reviewed and get back to you. As to if the surgeons we speak with have ever seen it - I would venture to say yes. We consult with some of the top surgeons in the nation. |
